The winter can be a challenging time to stay physically and socially active due to colder temperatures, slippery conditions, and fewer daylight hours. However, you’ll find it is worth the effort, because staying active and connected with others is a great way to keep the “winter blues” away. Here are a few things to try this season:
Indoor Movement and Fitness: Gentle yoga, light aerobics, tai chi, and dancing promote balance, flexibility, and strength. Chair volleyball, balloon badminton, and seated bowling add an element of friendly competition and teamwork. These activities offer a safe, adaptable way for everyone to stay active and engaged indoors.
Start or Join a Book Club: Are you an avid reader? Do you want to read more? A book club is a great way to socialize and become exposed to new books and genres. Start one of your own with a group of friends who like to read; that way, you can decide when and where to meet and what to read.
Go for a Walk: Going for a walk is always a great way to get yourself in motion. Ask a friend or family member to join you for some company. It doesn’t matter if it is a slow leisurely stroll in the hallway or a brisk walk outside (weather permitting); you’ll feel the mental and physical benefits of the exercise.
Weekly Meal or Gathering: Sharing a meal with friends and family encourages conversations and shared memories. Just being together can lift spirits on chilly days. You’ll find yourself looking forward to each weekly get-together.
Play a Game: Organize a game day once a week. Whether it is playing cards, a board game, or an interactive video game immerse yourself in a fun afternoon with friends or family.
